IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is a light energy that is applied to certain parts of the body, so that the target structure - whether it be hair or blood vessel in the skin - absorbs the energy and is destroyed.

IPL is not the same as laser, although it is similar. The main difference is that laser (Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation) is a technique of producing light energy of only one wavelength. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses white light which contains all the wavelengths of visible light from red to blue. However, to concentrate the treatments on different structures, filters are used to reduce certain wavelengths that are not needed.

The IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) machine produces a sudden burst of light which is channeled down some fibreoptic tubes into a hand-piece. The hand-piece is held on the skin at the point where treatment is needed and light energy is transmitted to the skin. The equipment has an in-built cooling system which makes the treatment very confortable.

Different people have different skin colour, different hair colour and also different hair thickness. As such, our trained therapists will assess your skin, colour of hair and thickness of hair to see what the appropriate settings and power are needed for your IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment.

Which areas can be treated with IPL?

Upperlip, chin, sidebeards, bikiniline, legs, underarms, arms, back, chest, shoulders, nose area, ears and necks.

Who performs the treatment?

Our IPL treatments are carried out by beauty therapists.

Each have undergone  relevant training in order  to ensure that they give the very best of care and attention to our clients. As well as administering treatments, they are also highly qualified to advise on what is the appropirate course of treatments for each client to get towards the desired effect.

What should I expect at the appointment?

At your initial consultation your goals, skin type and hair quality will determine your suitability for IPL hair removal, and the optimum treatment programme for you to achieve the best results.

A “test patch” will usually be performed. Eye protection is worn by the patient and the operator. The operator slowly moves a hand-piece over the treatment area as pulses of light energy are delivered. Most people experience minimal discomfort, feeling a slight burning and tingling sensation. A soothing cream is applied at the end of the treatment.

What other benefits can one achieve from IPL?

IPL can be used successfully for the hyperpigmentation of the skin, thread veins on the facial areas, skin rejuvenation and acne. Ask your therapist for more details.
